For those of you with psoriatic arthritis the results will come as no surprise to you, but it's an interesting little study that set out determine the effects of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) on sleep quality.

Quote:
Aim:
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) on sleep quality and investigate the association between sleep quality and clinical parameters of PsA, quality of life and psychological state in patients with PsA.

Method:
Forty-one patients with PsA and 38 healthy volunteers were included in this study. In both patients and healthy controls, sleep quality was assessed by means of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and anxiety and depression were assessed by means of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). In addition, PsA Quality of Life (PsAQoL) Index and Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) were used on patients. Generalized pain was assessed by means of a visual analogue scale (VAS).

Results:
Subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance, daytime dysfunction and total PSQI scores were significantly higher in patients with PsA compared to healthy controls. Total PSQI scores significantly correlated with anxiety, generalized pain, PsAQoL scores, enthesitis and levels of C-reactive protein (CPR) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (P < 0.05). Also, multiple regression analysis indicated that ESR level was independently associated with total PSQI score (P <0.05, R2 = 0.325).

Conclusion:
Sleep quality is diminished in patients with PsA. Sleep disturbance is particularly associated with generalized pain, anxiety, enthesitis and levels of CRP and ESR in patients carrying the diagnosis of PsA.

Sounds like logical.
If your feet and hands are quite hurting, than probably you will not fall asleep easy and your mind keeps on worrying on how to get rid of the pain and the problems.
So it is both a physical and a psychological problem with increased stress that you are dealing with.

I guess that as soon as you have this more or less under control. That your sleep also becomes better.
Myself, having to deal with PsA and having that currently under control, have the impression that I sleep quite well.
My sleep quality is between 70 and 80 %. How do I know?
I measure it every night with a little program on my phone. Smile
Looks like this
[Image: 15670171416_cd7225ac2f_b.jpg]
In the beginning of the night you see a bit of restless period where there is REM sleep and more movement, then there is a period of quite deeper sleep, and last Monday I more or less was awake round 05:00 hr already and an bit restless in my sleep.
These graphics vary greatly from night to night. But the pattern of light and deep sleep is always visible.
How exactly the program calculates the sleep quality is not really clear to me.

No.
It'so just lying besides me on the edge of the mattress, there is a movement sensor in it.
In the morning it detects if I am getting awake, you start to move more when you are almost awake, and if it detects that it wakes me up. It makes it easier to stand up when you are almost awake other then coming from a deep sleep.

This is a free IPhone app called sleepbot. No wires, just place it on your pillow. You can save them each night and create graphs to show and display different features. It is a great help to understand your sleep patterns. My wife has been using every night since February this year.

As for the study, this does not surprise me. I used to sleep long and deep, but as my PsA has progressed, my sleep time has decreased dramatically, and the quality of the sleep has likewise decreased. I permanently feel tired and weary, which makes the condition worse.

Hi, I was not aware of it until my wife started using it. The only problem is it struggles when my wife and I are both snoring at the same time! The microphone on the IPhone is not great, so it normally only picks up her.

My wife has a mouth guard which she uses when she sleeps, as it reduces sleep apnoea and migraines. This program / App proved that the mouth guard worked, comparing sleep with and without the mouth guard in place.
