Hi,

I am a father to a 4 months old beautiful daughter. My mother has psoriasis and We are from Sri Lanka. There is no any organization directly related to psoriasis to talk to. Therefore I need your help and advises. Will my baby get psoriasis genetically from her grandmother? What tests we can have to know whether she is vulnerable to the psoriasis?
My mother has had it heavily at her younger age around 20 years old and now she is 57 with almost no visibility of psoriasis. But my daughter is showing no symptoms for now and I need to know whether it is possible to do certain tests. Thanks a lot in advance.

Nishan

Hi Nishan and Welcome to the forum, I don't know of any test that will determine whether it will be active in your daughter..
What I can tell you is my experience, I was one of four children, and I was the only one that developed psoriasis in a big way, my sisters all avoided it although my eldest sister did get a few plaques on her elbow later in life
My parents never showed any signs of it, I don't know about my grandparents though.....

I have two daughters neither of them have exhibited any psoriasis yet they are both in their early forties
I have four grandchildren that have not got it ( as yet) they are age 12 downwards

I wouldn't worry about your daughter having it, just give her a loving , happy stress free upbringing , and enjoy her....
If later it develops I would deal with it then, it could be years in the future yet if it happens at all

There are so many advances in the treatment of psoriasis now that the chances are if it does develop there will be an effective drug to control it.

Sorry I can't be of more help but I think you should put these worries out of your head and assume she won't develop it.

Thank you very much Jim.

Really appreciate your reply. What is said is correct and I was worrying to know whether we have a way of testing to see whether we get it or not. It's not practical it seems. Thanks again.

Hello Nishan Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

It is said there is an hereditary link, but I'm not a huge believer in that myself as I have never known anyone else in my family close or distant that has ever had psoriasis. My mother came from a family of about 15 and not one of them or their children have it as far as I know.

As for if your daughter will get psoriasis it's impossible to say, and as far as I'm aware there is no actual test to find out.

I would say don't worry about it and enjoy watching your daughter grow up, if she does end up with psoriasis it's not the end of the world and things have moved on a lot in the past few years with treatments to control it.

So enjoy yours and your babies life and worry about it if it does happen, and even then don't worry to much it's not life threatening and people can learn to live with it.

Please don't hesitate to keep us informed and ask away if you have any other questions.

Regards.

Fred.

Don't want to worry you but...
My grandfather had it, my dad has it, my brother has it a little bit, my sister has it, and I have it quite seriously.
This is not statistical relevant but I think there are genes in families that may come to expression.

And there you have it, Caroline's post says the opposite to what I was saying with my family. And it just goes to prove that if the truth be told "No one knows why we have psoriasis" There are many will say it's from your family, there are some will say it's from stress, some say from injury or infection, others say it's because we eat the wrong thing, some just get it.

There is no conclusive proof as to why we have it, and that is why it's so difficult to treat for each individual.

Hello and welcome Nishan. From my understanding there is a genetic link. Both my grand fathers had psoriasis as did my father. My brother has no symptoms. As mentioned stress tends to have an impact. There may be a genetic predispostition but it doesn't necessarily mean that our family will show signs. My father and grandfathers only had mild Psoriasis. I think my case us more severe due to the amount of stress and my lifestyle. I too encourage you to enjoy Your beautiful girl and lead healthy lives.

Hi. I meant to say both my adult children show no signs of psoriasis.

One of the first questions I was asked after getting the psoriasis diagnosis was if anyone in my family ever had it. The answer was not to my knowledge. As far as I know I am the only one within my family with it.
