Kidneys can keep the body working at above ~25% of normal capacity. You have said that the cyclosporin was ceased due to kidney damage. What interval was there between ceasing the cyclosporin and commencing Fumaderm? Also, was your husband advised to take plenty of fluids with his Fumaderm? I ask this because I get very thirsty several hours after taking DMF unless I take it with plenty of fluids.
As Caroline pointed out, monoethyl fumarate is nephrotoxic, but so is DMF, so any fumaric ester needs careful monitoring, and it looks like this was done. Kidney damage from Fumaderm tends to be reversible if picked up early, and it sounds like it was.
