I'm not in Canada so can't help much with that. However, a lot of the drug companies offer programs that help with the cost here in the US so I would think that would be true at other places. The first thing to do is to get with a dermatologist (as others have mentioned) and get started on finding the treatment that is best for you. There are so many out there.
I remember (and still at times) worrying about leaving flakes behind. I find that moisturizing helps with the flakes a bit. When they aren't so dry they tend not to itch and also not to flake off so easily. But try not to let it prevent you from doing what you want to do. I think that for the most part, people don't notice as much as we think they do.
