You could ask your doctor for an anti inflammatory medicine. Also compression socks can help with leg swelling. You can get them fitted by a doctor or purchase the over the counter kind at stores or online. I know that's not an explanation as to what's going on (hopefully your doctor can help answer that) but it's a couple of ideas to help manage. Jim gave some good advice also on managing the swelling.
