Even the snows of New Hampshire don't stop psoriasis...

My acquaintance with psoriasis began in 1992.  I have numerous mild plaques that seem almost stable, due to medication, or perhaps in spite of medication.  The medics like to prescribe Taclonex and Cordran tape.  The tape has been effective, but I use it very sparingly.  Taclonex, even generic, is shamefully expensive.  Its Calcipotriene component is the expensive one, at 10$/gram.

Let me extend sympathy to those with severe psoriasis.  Courage!

Hello Bob  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

I think a lot of people with psoriasis need courage. It takes a lot to get it out in the open and to keep up the fight to find something that works, but we can all share our support and experiences here which does help.

I'm not sure where NH is, I'm guessing the USA. You mention expensive, don't you have insurance or help where you are? In Europe we get subsidised or free treatment.

Anyway, just dive on in, you will find a friendly bunch of people.

Regards.

Fred.

Hi again Bob I said welcome in your other post but will say it again here, you are welcome to join in, as long as you keep your New Hampshire snow fortunately we don't get much where I live in the east of England.

I haven't heard of Cordran tape ....what is it?

As fred said feel free to jump in and join in the posts, we are a very friendly group of sufferers who are pleased to share experiences, some of us have been severely covered with psoriasis and some with mild psoriasis. But it's the same disease and we all want to get it under control, and have an understanding of each other's feelings

This is a great place to learn of the various treatments that are available in case you ever get a bad flare and topical stop working

We also have an active off topic section if you want to learn more about the members in there you will find , members photos, the ask threads, and a chatting thread and lots more  [Group Specific]

Hello Fred,

NH (aka New Hampshire) is in the Northeast USA, in New England.

Yes, we have insurance, but it is mostly private.  After paying the deductible, I pay 30%.  For a $900 can of Enstilar, that's $270 (217 pounds).

Hello jiml,

From one of the web sites I found:
"FLURANDRENOLIDE (flure an DREN oh lide) is a corticosteroid. It is used on the skin to reduce swelling, redness, itching, and allergic reactions."

The tape is about 2" wide.  The user cuts a piece off the roll, removes the backing paper, and applies to the skin.  The tape sticks in place.  The manufacturer claims that the tape keeps the medication in contact with the skin, which increases efficacy.  I found it effective, but I haven't used it for several years.  I think of it as a reserve.

If you wish t try it, discuss with your physician.  Among possible side effects:
    • blurred vision, or seeing halos around lights;
    • headache, back ache, weakness, confusion, mood changes;
    • sleep problems (insomnia);
    • weight gain, puffiness in your face;
    • muscle weakness, feeling tired; or
    • high blood sugar (increased thirst, increased urination, hunger, dry mouth, fruity breath odor, drowsiness, dry skin, blurred vision, weight loss).
Wow!  I never experienced any of that stuff, though I'm not sure about confusion, since that is my natural state.

eek that's a big list .....  but I guess it's the same with all steroid treatments, I don't need it, but was curious as I hadn't heard of it ...
Fortunately my current treatment keeps me clear without the steroid effects ( although I have thin skin from years of using them )

Thank you for the clarification Bob, I'm not up on US states. Blush

That's over €250 Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek I don't know how long a can lasts but that is not cheap. We are lucky here in France, we get 100% for a long duration illness which psoriasis is as long as your GP agrees you still have it every 5 years.

As for confusion. Join the club, I've had that all my life. Big Grin
