I got a bad cold sore the other day and I had forgotten how damned annoying they were as I haven't had one for a long long time. I did have a bit of my favourite over the counter treatment but it was almost a year out of date, then I remembered reading once that Coconut Oil had Antiviral properties.

I've been using it on the cold sore and it's drying out very quickly. In fact I would say it's working quicker than the stuff I used to buy from the pharmacie.

How much better can this stuff get? Apparently it's antiviral properties have been found to be effective in destroying viruses that cause influenza, measles, herpes, mononucleosis hepatitis C, and AIDS.

So thank you once again Coconut Oil. I will be using you again if I ever get another cold sore, but next time I will try it first off to see if it is effective as the over the counter stuff at stopping the cold sore coming out or if it only works to dry it out quickly.

*Remember if you do want to use Coconut Oil don't go cheap. The cheap stuff is useless and you need to spend a bit more for a good quality Virgin Organic one. It goes a long way and the extra you spend will be worth it.

Thanks for this info Fred!  Mr. Kat asked me a couple of hours ago if we had anything for a cold sore and I said, no.... oh wait!  Try some of my coconut oil.  I asked him just now how it was doing and he said he feels much better already!!   Big Grin

You're welcome Kat I was amazed how quick it worked too. It's good to know that is helping Mr Kat, I did wonder if it may have been coincidence. Tell him I did find that you shouldn't run it across your lips as there is a risk of spreading the virus, but I just kept slapping it on and it soon got it sorted without spreading.

I'll tell him, he's quite happy with the results! Glad I remembered you posting that it had helped you.

I tried coconut oil the other day, is it supposed to feel soothing because my p felt more sore and itchy after?
I used normal moisturiser in the end to calm things down. Is a cumulative thing that I need to persevere with?

For me, it is soothing when applying and for awhile afterwards (much like the prescriptions creams) but I think it's because it helps with the dryness that causes itchiness, plus it's suppose to help with immunity according to many websites.   It isn't long lasting for me and I don't think it's one of those things that build up over time (although it's possible to have benefits that come with regular application, I'm just not sure how accurate that is).  For me it works better than just a normal moisturizer but with all the different types of psoriasis and different skin types it may not work the same for everyone.

I do use just a general moisturizer with coconut oil if I am planning on going out.  Since it's a lotion it's not as "greasy" as just using straight coconut oil.  I've also started using a shampoo and conditioner with  coconut oil in them and I've noticed a big improvement in itchiness immediately after washing my hair.  I've used the straight coconut oil in my hair, but it's a pain to wash it out.

I'm like Kat I find it soothing, I've not had any itchiness with it but can find it gives a mild stinging sensation on raw skin where you have picked the flakes for a minute or so.

I did once try a cheap version and found that was of no use though it didn't make me itch, I now use Biona extra virgin and find it to be the best.

Hello,

I need some help...the only coconut oil I remember is the white thick stuff that comes in a jar...is that the thing you're talking about?

And I never new that you could cook with ?

I remember years ago a woman had thickened herself in it before she went in the garden to sun bathe and she nearly cooked herself from the inside out !!!

I know you might thing that I've just answered my own question, but i'm so lost on this and I really want to try it as a moisturiser.

Yes it's white and a bit like candle wax. It melts on body heat and you just rub it in.

Yes you can eat it, but it is a fat so if you are concerned about your health you should treat it as such and eat in moderation. I don't eat it, but use it as a moisturiser.

Don't buy cheap, and go for virgin coconut oil.

I use Biona Organic Raw Virgin Coconut Oil and get it from Amazon.

I doubt very much that you can cook yourself in the sun though.

Oh thanks Fred...writing that down and will see if I can get some tomorrow.

Me and Amazon are bosom buddies.

You're most probably right about the cooking as well...I have been told before, don't believe it till you see it.  I should take that on board. lol
