Hello,

I have been looking around the site for a while now...and with jiml's help I have been able to add my replys, but I don't know how to ask a question without going on PM.

So if anyone is there here's the question:

How do you know the difference between psoriasis arthritis and osteoarthritis?

I don't do the doctors anymore...the first thing they say is "do you smoke?" I want to reply  "well I didn't smoke when I was four?"

So...any help with the arthritis thing?  would be very greatful

Well you have succeeded in asking your question. The only thing wrong with it was that it's in the wrong place, but that is no big deal and I have moved it for you to Psoriasis And Psoriatic Arthritis Topics

Re the difference that is better diagnosed by a professional. But some tell tail signs are your nails, if the are pitted and/or have lines in them and look like they are coming away from their beds then it is usually a sign of psoriatic arthritis.

Of course doctors will ask you if you smoke it's bad for you and some studies say it can make psoriasis worse. I found giving up smoking made no difference at all to psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. If you don't want to go to the doctors then you are going to struggle to live with psoriasis without doing so in my opinion.

You need a proper diagnoses and then a referral to a dermatologist and/or rheumatologist, they are better suited to help you and are the only ones that can prescribe something that will help. So bite your lip and get an appointment with your GP, answer his/her questions and go from there.

There are so many different types of arthritis and you need to get a proper diagnoses.

Yes there is usually someone here that can help if you need help with any question,
Ask anywhere and someone will appear if not with an answer with some support

I myself don't know the difference between the two diseases but I'm sure others will.

Probably this is the best way to ask a question if you place it in the wrong place Fred can move it ....(he has magic hands) , as with a PM you are just speaking to one person which is fine if you want tuition

But for answers ask away on the boards

If you are in a muddle at the bottom of the front page you will see " forum team" click on that and you can ask a forum helper for assistance by pm of course and they will guide you

This is the ultimate way to pose a question. It is the idea of a forum. Now your question is visible for us all and anyone can react to it.

Characterisiics of PsA are:
- problems with your nails
- pain in the small joints of your fingers and feet
- feels if they sometimes stick a needle in it.
- most people also have psoriasis at first

Thank you Fred for moving me to the right place...and thank you for all the advice given.

I did get slightly disillusioned with the doctors and hospitals, between, methotrexate, lights, dovabet, special baths...but maybe its time to give them another try.

If you've been through  Dovobet, Light, Methotrexate then it's time get yourself back to a dermatologist and discuss your next options. I would suggest asking about the Bio treatments, you can read more about them here: Biological Treatments For Psoriasis

Things have moved on a lot and you may be pleasantly surprised, I know I was after not seeing a dermatologist for about 10 years.

The difference between the two can be complicated, but I hope my answer isn't so. Osteoporosis (OA) is permanent joint damage typically caused by over using the joint. The pain caused by OA typically goes away with rest.

The damage caused by PsA is related to your body's inflammatory process. Typically, joints gets stiff and sore with rest.

To sum it up - Rest makes OA feel better while rest with PsA makes the joint more stiff and it may hurt more. Hope this helps.

This summed it up well. Psoriatic Arthritis is an auto immune disease and Ortho Arthritis is a degenerative disease. At least that's how I understand it to be. I have Ortho and it's true that rest helps with the pain, sadly once you start using the joint again it tends to go right back to hurting. Doctors can usually tell which one it is by testing... bloodwork, xrays, etc however I don't believe there is an actual "test" for psoriatic arthritis, but it's determined by ruling out other types and by symptoms.
