Hi i'm new to the psoriasis club. Started to develop a rash about a week and a half ago, which started on the palm of my hands and then gradually spread to most other areas of my body. i thought it was excema to begin with as I have suffered with excema on and off for years.

But after making an appointment to see the doctor today he told me that it was guttate psoriasis.

He has given me Dermol cream to apply, oilatum for the bath and antibiotics, I have to take the antibiotics 2 tablets at a time 4 times a day, 8 tablets in total. this seems a lot of tablets, just wanted to know if anyone else who was first diagnosed was given this many tablets to take a day. They are penicillin.

To be honest I'm not sure, but that does sound like the wrong approach to me. I don't see how antibiotics are going to help, however I could be wrong as I have never had guttate psoriasis.

Hopefully another member will have more info, but if it helps the info I do know is.

Guttate Psoriasis normally occurs following a streptococcal throat infection and is more common among children and teenagers. It causes small (less than 1cm or 1/3 inch) drop-shaped sores on your chest, arms, legs and scalp. Numerous small red scaly patches quickly develop over a wide area of skin, although the palms and the soles are usually not affected. There is a good chance that guttate psoriasis will disappear completely, but some people go on to develop plaque psoriasis.

Gosh that does seem a lot .... I often think docs think we have all the time in the world to sit there and dot cream on!!!

I wonder if he doesn't have a lot of experience with skin!!! You can ask to see a GP who knows more.

Like Fred said guttate psoriasis is far more likely to clear, I have seen it happen myself a beautiful girl came to me and asked for my advice with her skin I said Guttate she saw doc he confirmed after a while she was totally clear.....I was very jealous

Hers was triggered from stress around the time of her GCSEs ...... So my biggest advice is don't stress about it as it won't help

And moisturise well

And you can ask for a throat swab to check for strep throat

That does seem like a lot of penicillin. Mind you, I'm allergic to the stuff so haven't been prescribed it for anything since I was 5.

I'm no expert on guttate psoriasis but am sure someone with personal knowledge will be able to advise soon.

I do hope it clears up for you and agree that stress does exacerbate any type of psoriasis so try to relax as best you can.

I have had strep throat as well as the rash and still have the bad throat. i think I should probably get a second opinion from another doc after the weekend.

It is so hard trying to relax when you are covered in a rash but I will have to try and be patient and hope that it clears up soon

I am using the dermal as often as I can, it is only day 2 using the cream so I hope it starts working soon. Has anyone used dermol before?

Yes it is hard to think positive when you have psoriasis, but believe me it does help immensely. If you're feeling down or grumpy just take 5 minutes in a calm quiet place and think of nice things, or have a read in the [Group Specific] board, I'm sure you will find something to amuse you.

I have never heard of anyone using Dermol for psoriasis, I think it's usually used for eczema and I don't think it does a lot. To be honest I don't thing your GP is going in the right direction, so yes I would try and get to see another one. Actually don't Try, Demand to see another one as the sooner you get the right treatment the better it will be.

I know it seems strange to have been prescribed dermol as it has no mention of the word psoriasis anywhere on the leaflet or the box! It does feel nice and moisturising though, but I am new to all things psoriasis lol.

Totally agree. It is hard to relax when you're covered in a rash. I tend to schedule a mini breakdown about once a week then give myself a treat (usually a new book, but that's just me).

I also agree with how nice it feels to moisturise. I've posted before about using organic coconut oil after a nice soak in the bath. It makes me feel more human again and I have the waft of a luxury tropical island (or a Bounty bar).

a good book sounds like a great way to relax. I love chocolate but I don't know if it makes psoriasis worse
