I am new here. Up until now, I have been given dovobet ointment, with mixed results. Right now I am reading all I can to learn about different treatments so I can go to my doctor with lots of options to dovobet. Mainly I am sick and tired of ruining my furniture with the ointment, and leaving a snail trail everywhere I go. That and the itching is driving me nuts. Embarrassed about the trail of skin flakes I leave behind as well. I also live in Manitoba, Canada and was wondering about treatments and covered drugs, as I am not a rich man by any means.

Hello Wintrman,

Welcome to Psoriasisclub.

We are a group of individuals with psoriasis or Psoriatic Arthritis, spread all over the world, and we also have members from Canada.

Out of your description I cannot see how worse your Psoriasis is. Where do you have it for instance and what kind of psoriasis is it.

About cheap treatments spoken and also good for the itching over here we do like a good virgin coconut oil. It appears to help a lot of us.

The forum is divided in several parts. Of course the psoriasis parts, but we also have an Off-topic section, where you can find a lot of banter, jokes, discussions about virtually anything, the bar, the coffeeshop, so take a look around and make yourself comfortable

Cheers,
Caroline. Wave

Hello Wintrman  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

Dovobet is not a long term treatment and I'm guessing you have not seen a dermatologist, you can read more about Dovobet here: Dovobet And Dovonex (What's the difference ?)

As croline said we do have other Canadian members and I can't comment on your countries protocol for treating psoriasis, but my knowledge is that it is similar to most countries. Creams, Light, Oral and Bio.

If you are not seeing a dermatologist, I suggest you ask your doctor to refer you to one as soon as possible as your profile says you were diagnosed in in 2014. That is far to long to still be on Dovobet and things have moved on a lot in the past few years.

Regards.

Fred.

Hi Wintrman!

Welcome to the club  Welcome

You should really be referred to a dermatologist.  He or she will determine with you the best treatment based on how much psoriasis you have, type of psoriasis, etc.

I'm from Canada (Quebec) and treatments haven't been expensive for me.  Are you covered by a health insurance?

My dermatologist started me on methotrexate.  Although many people find this treatment bad, it cleared me completely of psoriasis and I had no side effects.  I never had light therapy. I have since moved onto biologics as I have psoriatic arthritis.

Many treatments are available in Canada.  Biologics are expensive but in my case, my insurance pays a portion and then the support program for the biologic I am taking pays the difference.  There is a support program for each biologic.  Therefore, I just pick up my medication at the pharmacy and have nothing to pay!

Hope this helps

Hi Wintrman, Welcome to the club  Welcome I'm in Australia so I cannot add much to the discussion around what is available in Canada. There are lot of people here far more knowledgeable than me so I will just say welcome and that we are here to support each other both from a more technical point of view as well as just being an ear to listen and share experience.

Stay safe - Craig

Hi wintrman and  Welcome to the club, you have come to the best place for unbiased friendly advice about psoriasis. There is so much information here about the available medications and members experiences of the condition.
Dovobet is intended to be a short term treatment of psoriasis and long term use can and will cause skin thinning as I suffer from that after years of using steroid creams.
As has been suggested in earlier posts you should see a dermatogist who will advise of the best way forward for you.  I guess you will be offered methotrexate as that seems to be the first drug offered and usually its very successful
But if you have any questions just shout out and someone will respond fairly fast

Good luck Jim

Welcome!

I'm not in Canada so can't help much with that. However, a lot of the drug companies offer programs that help with the cost here in the US so I would think that would be true at other places. The first thing to do is to get with a dermatologist (as others have mentioned) and get started on finding the treatment that is best for you. There are so many out there.

I remember (and still at times) worrying about leaving flakes behind. I find that moisturizing helps with the flakes a bit. When they aren't so dry they tend not to itch and also not to flake off so easily. But try not to let it prevent you from doing what you want to do. I think that for the most part, people don't notice as much as we think they do.

Glad you found your way here as there is a ton of information available as well as a group of friendly people always willing to answer questions.

Again, Welcome!

Kat

Thank you Caroline. I have plaque psoriasis covering about 60% of my arms. I have plaque covering about 30% of my navel. Mild plaque on my chest. Plaque in many areas of my back. And of course, plaque on my knees. I have an appointment in about 10 days with a specialist. I am hoping I can come away with a new treatment plan. I have plaque on my head, in my ears, on my eyelids. I am feeling a bit desperate and have been depressed about this for quite some time because of the way view me and sometimes the way they treat me.

So here I am. Looking for treatments, ideas and a little hope. I had read that gluten has a negative effect on psoriasis, so I have cut my gluten intake in half. Dairy is another no no. Does this strike a nerve??
